After creating our own recorder ensemble in third grade, we are now ready in Grade 4 to explore other types of ensembles. This is the year where we start chorus and band, two staple ensembles in America's music education in schools. To learn more about these two ensembles, you can click on the Chorus or Instrumental links to the left.
To facilitate this next step in our music education, we will explore two topics in Grade 4 general music classes: ensembles and musical elements. The first topic will help students understand what kind of ensembles are out there that may be different than our chorus or band, and what skills are necessary in order to create a successful ensemble. We will create our own ensemble using the instruments we have around us and different vocal techniques we learn in class. The second topic, musical elements, will help students become informed and positively contributing members of our chorus and band. We will first use a Theme and Variation piece to learn how musicians use each of the Eight Musical Elements to create different kinds of music. As a class, we will then discover the eight musical elements in our own songs.
